Crawford, Nebraska, is located in the scenic White River valley nestled between diverse historic and scenic surroundings. The escarpment consists of pine covered hills south and east of town, with Nebraska National Forest lands, Fort Robinson, hills and buttes to the west located in the 2nd largest state park in Nebraska.  Lover’s Leap Butte overlooks Crawford from the west. Oglala National grasslands and badland areas are located north approximately 15 to 20 miles, which includes Toadstool Park and the Hudson-Meng Bison Bone Bed.

Crawford has a population of approximately 1100, at an elevation of 3675, 9 hole golf course on the White River recognized as one of the best in the state, K-12 public school, nursing home/assisted living facility, low-income retirement duplexs, medical clinic, dental clinic, excellent volunteer fire department and ambulance squad, livestock sale barn, downtown businesses, 7 churches.

Wildlife resides here in abundance including Merriam wild turkeys, white tail and mule deer, elk, big horn sheep, plus the normal varmits. Bird watchers can enjoy numerous species including those unique to this area where the west meets the east. Burlington-Northern Santa Fe railroad traverses the area hauling coal from the Power River Basin in northern Wyoming to power plants. Train watchers come for miles to enjoy the trains, Belmont tunnel and Crawford hill.

The economy is agricultural based. Most farming is dryland cropping and grasslands supporting the beef cattle industry. Tourism is a major factor, as Fort Robinson, located 3 miles west of Crawford, is a destination point for many tourists. The railroad is a major employer and we also have an uranium mine providing employment in addition to the school, nursing home, etc.
